a slave’s death on a cross (Phil. 2:6–8). In response God the Father raised the Messiah to his right hand and bestowed his own name, Lord, on the royal and eternal Son. In effect Paul’s words act as an exposition of Peter’s Pentecost proclamation ‘that man Jesus whom you crucified, God has made Lord and Messiah’ (Acts 2:36). In Philippians 2 Paul is associating the exaltation of the risen Jesus with Isaiah’s promise that everyone will bow before YHWH the saviour (Isa. 45:23). The name YHWH is the
